Summer Wisdom from Ayurveda!

The longer days and warmer weather make me want to spend more time outdoors—whether that's in the garden, at the beach or pool, or simply relaxing with a good book in the shade.

If you're like me, you may find yourself staying up later, saying yes to more invitations, and trying to squeeze every last drop out of this season.

In Ayurveda, summer is associated with the fire element. While this energy can be uplifting and inspiring, it can also tempt us to overextend ourselves. Sleep may begin to feel optional, especially when the evenings are warm and filled with activity.

The challenge is remembering that even during a season of abundance, we still need rest. Overexertion is one of the quickest ways to create deeper exhaustion and imbalance. Ayurveda reminds us that true vitality comes not from doing more, but from balancing activity with periods of rest, reflection, and renewal.

Before the calendar fills up with vacations, cookouts, and endless to-do lists, it might be worth asking yourself a simple question:

What do you really want more of this summer?

Not what needs to get done. Not what's already on the schedule. What do you truly want more of?

Maybe it's more time in nature. More movement. More laughter. More quiet mornings. More connection with the people you love. More time to read, reflect, create, or simply be.

When the world around us becomes hotter and more intense, we benefit from creating a little more spaciousness, ease, and cooling in our daily routines.

That doesn't necessarily mean doing less. It means being more intentional.

  • Taking a morning walk before the day heats up

  • Spending time near water

  • Choosing foods that are fresh, seasonal, and hydrating

  • Making time for rest, reflection, and practices that help settle the mind

These simple rituals help create space in our lives. They remind us that health isn't something we achieve someday when life finally slows down. It's something we cultivate in the midst of our everyday experiences.

Most importantly, summer invites us to slow down enough to enjoy it.

One of the easiest ways to support balance during the summer months is through what we bring into our kitchens. Ayurveda reminds us that we don't need anything complicated—just a few cooling, nourishing ingredients can make a big difference in how we feel.

Fresh fruits, cucumber, mint, coconut, watermelon, and leafy greens are all wonderful choices during the warmer months.

Whether it's sipping a cucumber-mint cooler on the porch, taking an evening walk, or watching the sunset, these small moments help us stay connected to ourselves and to the rhythms of nature.

After all, wellness isn't found in doing more. Often it's found by slowing down enough to enjoy what is already here.

Looking Ahead: Beach Magic

One way to honor your need for nourishment and balance is by giving yourself something to look forward to—a dedicated time to step away from your responsibilities and reconnect with yourself.

That's exactly why I love our annual Beach Magic Retreat.

Held at the beginning of Vata season, Beach Magic offers an opportunity to slow down, breathe deeply, practice yoga, enjoy nourishing meals, walk along the shore, and reconnect with what truly matters. It's a chance to pause before the busy holiday season arrives and refill your cup in the company of an amazing community of women.

There is something magical about the ocean—the rhythm of the waves, the expansive horizon, and the invitation to simply be. Year after year, women tell me that what they treasure most isn't just the yoga, but the feeling of ease, connection, and spaciousness they experience during our time together.

If you're already feeling the pull to create more balance in your life this fall, I hope you'll consider joining us for Beach Magic. It may be exactly the pause your body, mind, and spirit are asking for.

Until then, may your summer be filled with sunshine, laughter, meaningful connection, and plenty of time to rest and restore along the way.

So before the season fills up, take a moment to ask yourself:

What do I really want more of this summer?

Then make a little room for it.

You may discover that what you're looking for has been waiting in that space all along.
